In merinos, 19/23 micron were one percent cheaper, while 20/22 microns were 0.5 percent cheaper and 21 micron was slightly cheaper. Merino skirtings 19/20/21/22 were generally unchanged, while 23 micron was two percent cheaper and 24 micron one percent cheaper. In crossbreds, 27/30 microns were slightly dearer and 28 micron was 0.5 percent dearer. The 29/31 microns were unchanged. In cardings, locks were slightly dearer and crutchings were generally unchanged. Interest from Japan, China, Taiwan and Italy was supported by Western Europe. Of the 22,381 bales offered, 11 percent was passed in. With the Australian Eastern market indicator falling 15 cents after a large offering and prices for broader microns dropping in New Zealand, there was little to encourage enquiry, they said. One market source described the prevailing mood as "wait-and-see". Others said the low level of stocks in the pipeline could produce a rapid increase in local prices on any sign of an upturn in the primary wool markets. Wednesday's greasy wool auction in the UK saw prices stabilise in steady demand. Fundamental demand for tops remains solid, with most mill sources reporting a constant level of repeat orders. 271050 MET sep 96
