But trade buying near the lows, as well as keen trade interest in the nearby December/March spread, limited losses and helped prevent the active December contract from falling through $1,370 a tonne support. "The trade bought spreads late in the day, which was supportive to the market," one dealer said. "It held the $1,370 level." The December position sunk to a session low of $1,370, before closing at $1,378 a tonne, down $11 on the day. It reached a high of $1,390. Second-month March ended off $12, at $1,408, while the remaining months lost $9 to $11. The market was expected to extend sharp gains racked up on Wednesday, with traders' pre-opening call coming in $5 a tonne higher. But after an attempt to pierce chart resistance at $1,390 failed, speculators shed their long positions. In the past month, the December contract has been rebuffed four times at the $1,390 mark. Dealers said December would need to get through $1,390 before a bid at a gap on the charts between $1,405 and $1,408. Support was pegged at $1,360. On the fundamental front, Ivorian Commodities Minister Guy-Alain Gauze told Reuters Thursday that the Ivory Coast will announce its 1996/97 cocoa farm-gate prices in mid-October. Ivorian exporters expected little or no change to the recommended farm-gate price, currently at 320 CFA francs a kg. On Wednesday, Ivorian Agriculture Minister Lambert Kouassi Konan said the new cocoa marketing season would start on October 15. Volume was estimated at 10,414 lots, down slightly from Wednesday's official tally of 10,673 lots. 271044 MET sep 96
