The mild upside bias was derived from news that the International Monetary Fund would be providing an additional $2 billion in aid to South Korea, bringing the its aid packaged to $23 million, one analyst said. Benchmark March cotton rise 0.14 cent per lb on the day, to 67.57 cents, after ranging between 67.65 and 67.25 cents. Second-month May closed 0.14 cent higher at 68.83 cents, while the rest of the board finished up 0.10 to up 0.25 cent. "The only news in the market was the expansion of aid to South Korea," said Sharon Johnson, an analyst with Frank Schneider, "Southeast Asia being a major importer of Western cotton." But she acknowledged that volume was thin on the floor. "Estimated volume was only 3,000 lots," she said. "So if the market did trade off of South Korea, you'd barely notice it." From a technical standpoint, a short-term uptrend is forming from the December 15 high of 65.75 cents a lb in the active March contract, providing support in Wednesday's market at the intra-day low 67.25 cents a lb. 291155 MET dec 97
