Mill buyers were also said to be enquiring only selectively for supplies available for shipment during the first half of 1998. The principal feature of interest to the trade was the lack of reaction of the New York cotton futures to react more positively to Thursday's favourable U.S. cotton export statistics. The markets rather disappointing performance was widely attributed to the continuing economic turmoil in several important raw cotton consuming countries in south east Asia. The forecast of U.S. production proved to be very little changed on the month, at 18,820,000 bales, traders said. Most customary participants in the raw cotton trade would doubtless await further pricing developments before adding to their existing commitments, they added. This followed a fresh bout of weakness in the New York futures market. Very few sales have proved practicable, they said. Some West African offers have been pitched at attractive rates but other origins remained comparatively firm in price, and were therefore in less demand. U.S. cotton has found additional offtake in Turkey, where U.S.government credit guarantees were considered favourable. Despite the decline in U.S. asking rates in sympathy with New York, however, many European markets report that buying interest in U.S. cotton is lukewarm. 151324 MET dec 97
