Finer merinos in general remain the sector favoured by fashion, with Italy a leading buyer and additional support from Japan. Combing machinery was extremely busy keeping up with demand, and overall market indicators have risen partly because of this specialised sector strength. British wool met with concentrated demand at a Bradford auction this week with Chinese orders said to be significant. New business at Bradford has not been buoyant. Orders have, however, come through from time to time, for export as well as home trade over recent weeks, so there is no immediate concern about machinery activity, even if profit margins remain a problem, traders said. 261104 MET sep 97
