"Yesterday the market had technical fund buying, but there was not much behind the move," said Dean Witter analyst Corey Bell. "It was strong technically with little concrete fundamentals." July cocoa dropped $29 a tonne on the day, to close at $1,469, after ranging from $1,502 to $1,467. Second-month September ended $27 lower, at $1,501, while the back months slumped $24 to $34. Cocoa prices edged higher at the opening, as speculators followed through on Thursday's rally to eight-week highs, traders said. But the market's failure to make the $5 to $10 higher opening due and the July contract's inability to get past Thurday's peak of $1,502 prompted local selling. Downward momentum accelerated after July contract fell through near-term support at $1,490, touching off light sell-stops, they said. Further light stops were activated after July broke through $1,480, they said. Some traders said Friday's pressure may have been due in part to liquidation or rollover of July contracts ahead of first notice day on June 17. On the charts, traders said July would probably find strong support at $1,450, with sell-stops building near $1,444. Fundamentally, Bell said mixed views would probably stymie any major move in the near-term. While bears dwelled on ample stockpiles, bulls focused on the weather in the Ivory Coast and potential developmental problems in the 1997/98 harvest -- although it is too early for any crop estimates. Volume reached an estimated 6,098 lots. 021108 MET jun 97
