Initial weakness was blamed on fund selling after the U.S. Department of Agriculture issued a slightly bearish export and sales report. The USDA put sales for the week ended March 6 at 98,700 480-lb bales, below market expectations. Commitments-to-date rose to 5.615 million bales. The USDA pegged exports at 6.8 million bales in 1996/97. Most-active May cotton eased 0.55 cent to close at 75.60 cents a lb, having ranged from 75.99 to 75.15 cents. The back months finished 0.38 lower to 0.25 higher. Volume reached an estimated 18,000 lots compared to Wednesday's official 17,046 lots. Open interest in May fell 1,497 lots from Wednesday, to 36,610 lots. While prices managed to recoup some losses, the market is expected to continue to retreat from its recent high of 78.25 basis May, in order to spark additional sales, analysts said. The USDA recently raised its export estimate to 6.8 million from 6.5 million bales, for 1996/97. 141001 MET mar 97
