Heavier losses were prevented by local and trade buying, which supported the May contract slightly under Tuesday's low of 73.80 cents where market analysts have pegged support. Resistance was seen at 75.50 cents in May. "Until we get through that level we run the risk of making new lows," Sharon Johnson, an analyst with Frank Schneider and Co Inc, said. But prices have ended lower for five of the past six days "so if nothing else, we're due for a bounce," she added. Volume was estimated at 22,000 lots compared to Monday's official 26,279 lots. Open interest in May fell 888 lots as of Tuesday's close. Most-active May settled at 73.92 cents per lb, down 0.28 cent, while the back months finished down 0.05 to 0.26 cent. Certificated stocks rose to 199,568 bales as of March 18 from 199,175 bales the previous day. The rising stocks will continue to put pressure on the spot month, analysts said. They do not expect Thursday's export and sales report to show brisk business the previous week since prices had climbed to recent highs. 201150 MET mar 97
