The run-up to the recent high of 78.25 cents basis the May contract hit on Monday reflected expectations for an increase in the USDA's export forecast, they added. In its report, the USDA raised exports to 6.8 million 480-lb bales from 6.5 million bales in February. Ending stocks fell to 4.15 million bales from 4.45 million bales. The 1996/97 production forecast remained unchanged at 18.95 million bales. May cotton eased 0.08 cent on the day to close at 77.85 cents a lb, having ranged from 77.95 to 77.50 cents. The back months finished 0.21 lower to 0.13 cent higher. Firm resistance was seen at the contract high of 85.40 cents in May. Today's volume reached an estimated 25,000 lots compared to Monday's official 33,291 lots. Dealers noted heavy trade selling throughout the day, and some speculative buying.
