ROME, Nov 30 (Hina) - "After a period of strong pressure on Croatia, the
situation in Geneva and Rome is favourable now", Croatian Foreign
Minister Mate Granic told Croatian journalists in Rome on Tuesday.
Minister Granic arrived in Rome from Geneva to attend a meeting of CSCE
foreign ministers.
Minister Granic said that the Croatian delegation in Geneva accepted
the proposal of the European Union on solving the situation in former
Yugoslavia. According to Croatian diplomats, three basic things included
in this proposal are in Croatia's favour. First, the Serb-held
territories in Croatia are to be referred to in documents as "Croatian
territory under UNPROFOR supervision." Second, lifting of the sanctions
against Serbia and Montenegro is to be linked with the situation in the
UNPAs. Third, the settlement is to be based on UN Security Council
Resolution 871, said Granic.
"The Muslim leadership insisted on access to the sea, but the integrity
of Croatian territory is out of question", said Minister Granic.
"Now it is up to Milosevic to accept the proposal of the European
Union, in other words to recognize the territorial integrity of
Croatia". According to Mr Granic, this problem is going to be discussed
at bilateral talks in Geneva.
If the Geneva talks yield any results, a "London 2" conference could be
held by the end of December, where Croatia could solve all its issues,
said Minister Granic, adding that it was the reason why Croatia insisted
on setting time-limits.
Answering a question on results that could be expected at the CSCE
meeting in Rome, Granic said that foreign ministers would accept
decisions reached in Geneva.
Italian Prime Minister Carlo Azeglio Ciampi opened the CSCE ministerial
meeting this morning, announcing that during its one-year term
chairmanship Italy would work on establishing peace on the other side
of the Adriatic.
