A BRIEF LOOK AT CROATIAN PRESS ON MONDAY

ZAGREB, May 6 (Hina) - In a front-page article headlined "Akashi's Second Last Chance" VJESNIK speculates on the possible continuation of the Geneva talks, which depends on Serb forces pulling out of the Gorazde exclusion zone by 09:00 hours Monday. The front page also carries a large photograph of a luscious oldtimer that took part in yesterday's rally from Zagreb to Bezanec Castle. The paper brings an interview with Deputy Minister of Maritime Affairs Ljerka Mintas-Hodak focused on the privatisation of Croatian Croatian shipping companies. Vlado Pandzic, Croatian member of the Bosnian Parliament, commented on recent sessions of the Constitutional Assembly of the Federation of Bosnia-Herzegovina. In a column titled "Life Stories of Refugees" VJESNIK relates the story of Granny Mara from Nadin, who, hoping soon to return to her village, spent "her first old-age pension on a kneading-trough, her second on a baking pan and her third on a cutlery set," and then died, instructing her children to bury her in Nadin. Nadin is a village in the Zadar hinterland (municipality of Benkovc) which was occupied by Yugoslav army tanks on November 18, 1991. According to survivors' testimonies, the Serb forces immediately killed seven civilians and expelled the rest. VJESNIK also runs a feature on the 50eth anniversary of D Day. Today's editorial in VECERNJI LIST, headlined "Who Is Responsible for Croatia's Banana Republic Image," deals with anonymous threats to Members of Parliament such as Budisa, Mesic and Boljkovac. An opinion poll conducted by the VECERNJI LIST staff shows that only 23 percent of interviewees answered a categorical "yes" when asked whether they were able to meet the cost of living. Over 70 percent supported the introduction of the kuna. 061207 MET jun 94
