UNPROFOR AGAIN ALLOWS SERB TANKS TO CROSS EXCLUSION ZONE

SARAJEVO, May 6 (Hina) - UNPROFOR escorted two Serb tanks through the Sarajevo exclusion zone on Thursday, said the UNPROFOR spokesman in Sarajevo, adding that UNPROFOR had acted on a clearance given by UN Special Envoy Yasushi Akashi to the Serb side. The spokesman told a news conference at UNPROFOR headquarters that the tanks were heading for Trnovo, 30 km S. of Sarajevo. He said that such "services" would not be provided in the future. Bosnian authorities reacted with outrage at such behaviour on UNPROFOR's part, said HINA's reporter in Sarajevo. Bosnian President Alija Izetbegovic said Thursday that Akashi's move destroyed any chances for a speedy restoration of peace in Bosnia- Herzegovina. Prime Minister Silajdzic said: "Akashi's dismissal lies with his superior, but as far as we are concerned, we consider him as having already resigned." According to military sources in Sarajevo, the Serbs are preparing a fresh offensive to regain strategic positions on Mount Igman. Serb forces seized the mountain last summer, but had to withdraw after protraced negotiations with UNPROFOR. Trnovo is the only way to reach the Rogoj pass, which dominates all roads to eastern Bosnia, particularly Gorazde. The fall of Trnovo in last year's offensive on Igman and Bjelasnica has been the most crushing defeat suffered by the Bosnian army in this war. Sarajevo has never accepted this loss, and the defeat led to a thorough revision of the organisation of the Bosnian army and its chain of command. 061803 MET may 94
