ZAGREB, May 17 (Hina) - Today's VJESNIK includes an article on an
amnesty for Croatian Serbs, under the headline "More Than An Act Of
Mercy."
"By granting an amnesty for a larger group of Serb
paramilitaries and authorities in the hitherto occupied parts of
Western Slavonia, Croatian President Franjo Tudjman did not only
show his mercy but also confirmed his determination to puruse the
peaceful resolution of the status of Serbs in Croatia and overall
Croat-Serb relations," writes Ante Ivkovic.
Ivkovic says that it should have been expected that Croats
would avenge their innocent victims.
"It's something else that confused the insurgents and
international monitors of the situation in Croatia. (...) Croatia
is ready to forgive and is strong enough to liberate its occupied
areas," Ivkovic says.
"Why all the commotion and unnecessary fuss of English
diplomats?" asks Maja Freundlich in a comment piece in connection
with statements by some English diplomats on the situation in
Croatia.
"Russians could have some direct political interests here. But
the English can earn in Croatia nothing but disgrace," Freundlich
writes.
"Blinded By Flash" is a commentary in VECERNJI LIST on a
resignation by General Celeketic, commander of Serb paramilitary
forces in Western Slavonia.
Vecernji List includes an article on talks between the
government and trade unions which resulted in an agreement on the
most important provisions of the Labour Bill.
