RED CROSS WARNS OF INCREASING TENSION IN BANJA LUKA

SARAJEVO, May 6 (Hina) - Tension in Banja Luka was growing after the arrival of Serbs from western Slavonia, the International Red Cross said today. According to spokesperson Nina Winquist, the non-Serb population in Banja Luka was subjected to threats which could easily escalate into overt violence. Two Red Cross vehicles were stolen in northern Bosnia and Red Cross representatives feared they could be used for unholy purposes. Red Cross representatives were in contact with about 1,500 Serbs who were transferred from the Pakrac area to other parts of Croatia, Winquist said. "They have all been registered and are safe," she said. The International Red Cross also registered 4,564 people who came to Nova Topola (in Serb-controlled northern Bosnia) from western Slavonia.
