BRITISH REP. TO UN WELCOMES ADOPTION OF RESOLUTION ON CROATIA

NEW YORK, April 1 (Hina) - Great Britain's permanent representative to the United Nations, Ambassador David Hannay, welcomed the adoption the three UN Security Council resolutions on Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Macedonia in his statement after the passing of the resolutions. Speaking of UN Protection Force in Croatia (former UN forces in Croatia) Hanney said that UNPROFOR "has also had its successes," adding that "the Yugoslav Army was successfully, and peacefully, disengaged. (...) UNPROFOR has been able to monitor the ceasefire agreement, and more recently facilitate the implementation of the economic agreement between the Croatian government and the Krajina Serbs." Hanney also said his government could understand the frustration of the Croatian Government at the slow pace of progress in the solution of the situation in the country. "Key elements of the Vance plan remain unimplemented, in particular the demilitarization of the UN Protected Areas and the return of the refugees and displaced persons," he said. Hanney emphasized that his government "remains fully committed to Croatia's sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders." He added that "at the same time, it is essential that a satisfactory autonomous status, and protection for individual rights, is firmly established for the Krajina Serbs ." He believed that "the deployment of UNCRO (new UN forces in Croatia) will clear the way for further talks on economic normalization and the start of talks on a political settlement." adding that "the latter, as the Contact Group has urged, should not be long delayed."
