LONDON, Dec 4 (Hina) - The UN transitional administrator of
Eastern Slavonia on Wednesday commended the efforts of the
Croatian government and local Serb authorities to peacefully
reintegrate the region into Croatia.
UN Transitional Administrator Jacques Klein made the comment
in London at a meeting with Croatian Foreign Minister Mate Granic
and British Foreign Office Minister Nicholas Bonsor.
Bonsor said in a statement that the talks stressed that free
and fair elections, return of refugees and displaced people,
Croats, Serbs and others, and efforts to restore economic
prosperity would contribute to the successful implementation of
the UNTAES mandate.
According to the statement, Granic expressed support for the
work of UNTAES, including full respect for human and minority
rights.
Granic described Tuesday's visit to Vukovar by Croatian
President Franjo Tudjman as a step which showed the Serb
population and the international community that Croatia supported
the peaceful reintegration of the region.
According to sources close to the Croatian delegation
attending a two-day conference on Bosnia-Herzegovina in London,
Klein said that the UNTAES mandate would end in time.
