ZAGREB, Nov 15 (Hina) - The UN Security Council had on Friday
adopted the Resolution 1079 (1996), which stipulated that the
mandate of the UN Transitional Administration for Eastern Slavonia,
Baranja and Western Sirmium (UNTAES) had been extended for an
additional six months, so to end by 15 July 1997, a statement from
the Croatian Foreign Ministry said on Friday. #L#
In the Resolution, the Council again reaffirmed its commitment
to the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the
Republic of Croatia, and, to that effect, stressed that the
Croatian Danubian area was an integral part of Croatia.
The Council also stressed the successes of UNTAES in
fulfilling its mandate - the peaceful return of the area to the
full and effective control and administration of the Croatian
government.
The Republic of Croatia expects all agreements reached
recently during talks between Croatian President Franjo Tudjman and
Transitional Administrator General Jacques Klein to be carried out
before the expiry of the deadline, which would lead to elections
and the introduction of all elements of the Croatian government to
the Croatian Danubian area.
To that aim, Croatia expresses and confirms its readiness to
cooperate effeciently and fully, as well as its support to General
Klein in the execution of agreed dynamics according to the formula
"early spring - early summer" by 15 July 1997, as regards the
holding of local elections, full transfer of authority to the
Republic of Croatia and a successful end to the UNTAES mandate.
The Resolution also mentions a possible continuation of some
form of United Nations presence in the area after 15 July 1997, for
an additional period of six months.
By the completion of the UNTAES mandate by 15 July 1997, with
everybody's full cooperation in the fulfillment of commitments,
conditions would be created which could restrict a new presence of
the UN to exclusively particular forms of monitoring in the
Croatian Danubian area.
