According to the draft resolution, the UNTAES mandate depends
to a certain extent on the success of local elections in eastern
Slavonia, Baranja and western Srijem.
The U.N. Secretary General is to submit his recommendations on
follow-up ways of U.N. presence in Croatia, shortly after the
elections are over.
In his latest report, UN Secretary General Boutros-Boutros
Ghali proposed that after the expiry of a six-month extension of
the UNTAES mandate, a UN monitoring mission remain in the area for
another six months.
The Contact Group left open in the resolution the issue of the
continuation of the U.N. mission in Croatia, including the
possibility of the reorganization of UNTAES.
The resolution calls on the Croatian government and local
Serbs to fully cooperate in the creation of conditions for the
conduct of the elections. It also calls on the Croatian government
to guarantee all ethnic minorities their rights.
