"The United States fully supports Croatia's integration into
European institutions and wants to work with the Croatian
Government toward that goal," spokesman David Johnson said, adding
that a prerequisite for this was a full and efficient
implementation of the Dayton Agreement.
"To succeed in this, we must implement the results of the
Mostar election and enforce the decision of Bosnian Croat
authorities to dissolve Herzeg-Bosnian structures and integrate
them into the Federation," he said.
Presidents Clinton and Tudjman agreed that the next step was
to fully establish the Federation, which included the transfer of
authority onto the Federation and the abolishment of parallel
Moslem and Croat structures, Johnson said. Another important
element was the establishment of a functioning local authority in
Mostar on the basis of the election results.
According to Johnson, both sides agreed that Herzeg-Bosnian
structures would be dissolved and integrated into Federation
structures by Aug 8, Johnson said.
"There are certain structures that are solely Croatian. In
order to fully realise the Dayton Agreement and ensure a lasting
peace in Bosnia, these structures must be dissolved. The results of
the Mostar election must be respected. This is what has been agreed
today," Johnson concluded.
