accredited in Croatia visited the command of the Croatian army in
Djakovo on Monday.
They were received by Lieutenant General Djuro Decak. #L#
After the meeting, doyen of the military political corps,
German colonel Peter Schwann, said that they had visited the UNTAES
headquarters in Vukovar and held talks with UN force commander,
Belgian General Joseph Schoups, adding that they had got a clear
picture of the situation in the area.
Commending the UNTAES for the good job it had done in reaching
a peaceful resolution, Schwann said that difficulties due to
unemployment had to be resolved, as well as that the area had to be
cleared of mines.
He expressed his belief that the UNTAES was doing everything
to prevent a social collapse in the occupied area and to prepare
the return of refugees.
Decak stressed that he had informed the members of the corps
about the military and political situation in the Croatian Danubian
area, demilitarization and the restructuring of Croatian armed
forces to a peace-time organization.
He added that the Croatian army was ready to take on the task
of clearing the separation zone of mines.
