ZAGREB, 14 April (Hina) - The Croatian Journalists' Union Executive
Committee on Sunday issued a statement, expressing their support
for journalists from the Istrian dailies 'Novi List' 'La voce del
popolo' and 'Glas Istre'. "We would like to express our deep
concern with the fact that more than 500 employees of 'Novi List',
'La voce del popolo' and 'Glas Istre' may lose their jobs, the
statement said, adding it expected from the Croatian Government to
protect employees of the three dailies from unjust financial fines.

'The authorised state bodies have fined 'Novi List' with 13,7
million kunas because of alleged tax and customs offenses'.
The alleged 'tax evasion' and 'the smuggling of an off-set
rotation machine' had been committed in line with the existing laws
and in line with the Government's interpretation of those laws, the
statement said, adding that the closing of 'La voce del popolo'
would mean the end of one of the most vital institutions of the
Italian minority in Croatia. For 'Novi List' and 'Glas Istre' the
decision would have immeasurable negative consequences.
'We expect from state authorities to find a way to solve this
financial problem gradually and enable the regular publishing of
the three dailies', the statement, signed by the Executive
Committee president Stipe Jolic said.
