The police of Bosnia-Herzegovina, accompanied by the
international police force entered Grbavica at around 6:30 am. A
police station was immediately opened in the suburb.
The police wearing green uniforms were welcomed by smaller
groups of residents who survived almost four years of occupation of
Grbavica. According to some estimates by the United Nations High
Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), some 1500 residents remained in
Grbavica, while the majority of Serbs left the suburb.
Signs of violence and arson are visible on buildings in
Grbavica. There is almost not a single building which does not have
several burnt flats. Most of the buildings look completely
abandoned.
From 10 am, Sarajevo residents will be able to visit their
relatives and friends living in Grbavica, but the Bosnian police
still do not allow mass crossing over the Miljacka bridge in order
to prevent incidents which happened during the reintegration of
Ilidza.
The head of Sarajevo State Security Centre, Enes Bezdrob, told
reporters in Grbavica that his policemen would guarantee full
safety to all citizens. Measures aimed at preventing robbers from
intimidating the local population and stealing things from
abandoned facilities had already been taken, he said.
