"I have just arrived from Baranja where I talked to 350 people
about the peaceful reintegration of eastern Slavonia," said
Galbraith, adding that he had been asked a lot of questions and
that the local citizens had not been sufficiently informed about
the Dayton Peace Accord.
Galbraith described his talks with Serbs in Baranja as useful,
adding that he had "fully explained to them the provisions of the
Accord".
"I told them that the Dayton Peace Accord was an agreement
which led to the reintegration of the area into Croatia and that
those who told them otherwise, were doing it to their
disadvantage," Galbraith said.
"I stressed to them the role of the UN in the implementation
of the Agreement and the importance of human rights - whether they
were Serbs, Croats, Hungarians," Galbraith said, stressing that he
told the Serbs in Baranja there would be no peace in the region if
Serbs stay and Croats leave the area, or vice versa.
