the establishment of Croatian authority in eastern Croatia, Ivica
Vrkic, today received the head of the UNTAES Information Office

"I have come following the instructions of Temporary
Administrator Gen. Jacques Klein, in order to discuss a number of
issues which will be included in the new situation," Arnold
clarified.
General Klein would be interested in establishing direct
communication with the population, because he wanted to be sure
that "everybody understands the Temporary Administration's tasks
and modus operandi," Arnold explained.
"In this way, the population would embrace reconciliation and
the area would be reintegrated into Croatia," Klein announced.
"We discussed ways to improve mutual relations so that we may
fulfill our joint mission to establish Croatian authority and
peacefully reintegrate," Vrkic said.
In the process of peaceful reintegration, Croatia had three
main goals: to establish its authority in the Croatian Danube area,
to return Croatian refugees and to protect the Serbs who wanted to
remain in the area, Vrkic outlined. Mutual confidence was part of
that process, he added.
