ZAGREB, Jan 16 (Hina) - An international police force continued to
deploy in Bosnia-Herzegovina on Tuesday to monitor and train local
police forces, a UN spokesman said.
UN spokesman Philip Arnold told a press conference in Zagreb
that 155 police monitors arrived in Bosnia-Herzegovina on Tuesday,
of whom 76 in Sarajevo.
The role and tasks of international police were specified by
Annex 11 of the Dayton peace agreement for Bosnia-Herzegovina. They
would be unarmed and would not do usual police work.
These forces would supervise, monitor, train and advise local
police and help them do their job, Arnold said.
Local authorities and communities were responsible for local
police forces which would do the real police work.
A total of 1721 international police officers would be
deployed in Bosnia-Herzegovina under direct command of a UN
coordinator in Sarajevo.
The southern town of Mostar was excluded from the jurisdiction
of the international police force because it was under the European
Union mandate.
International police had already played a certain role in
defusing tensions and bringing about a release of civilians
recently abducted by Serbs in the Sarajevo suburb of Ilidza, Arnold
said.
