Croatia "would support a continued deployment of United
Nations military observers in the area of Prevlaka peninsula in
Croatia, with an understanding that such a deployment shall be a
short-term interim arrangement, until, as proposed by my
Government, the U.N. arrangement is replaced by a regional
arrangement," Ambassador Mario Nobilo wrote in a letter to the
Security Council president.
"Croatia remains committed to confidence-building measures in
the Prevlaka peninsula, including full demilitarization of the area
on both sides of the international border, and to other aspects of
preventive diplomacy based on OSCE principles," the letter said.
"In addition, Croatia supports further negotiations with the
Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (Serbia and Montenegro) on issues
such as maritime passage for vessels utilizing the Boka Kotorska
harbor in the area.
Nobilo also reiterated that Croatian government could not
accept the Yugoslav Prime Minister Radoje Kontic's claim that there
is a "territorial dispute" between Croatia and FRY over the
peninsula.
