DEMIREL'S BOOK "A VIEW FROM THE BOSPORUS" PRESENTED IN ZAGREB

ZAGREB, Sept 22 (Hina) - A book of selected political essays and speeches by Turkish President Suleyman Demirel, entitled "A View from the Bosporus", was presented in Zagreb on Monday. The presentation was held in the Croatian Institute of History on the occasion of the arrival of the Turkish President in Zagreb for an official visit. The book was published by Croatian University Publishers (HNS) and the Croatian Institute of History as a third title in a recently launched HNS book series called "Witnesses of History". Special prefaces to this edition were written by Croatian President Franjo Tudjman and the author himself, President Demirel. The selection of essays and speeches was made by Assistant Foreign Minister Hido Biscevic, Croatia's first ambassador to Turkey. Welcoming Croatian political and public figures attending the ceremony, Turkish Ambassador to Croatia Daryal Batibay said that the latest official visit of the Turkish President confirmed the good political relations between the two countries. Presenting the book, Biscevic said that its first part brought Demirel's essays on Turkish foreign policy based on a "peace in the house, peace with the world" principle formulated by the "father of the nation" Mustafa Kemal Ataturk as well as Demirel's views on the compatibility of Islam, democracy and freedom. The second part is dedicated to the present crisis in southeastern Europe and the constructive political involvement of Turkey and its president in efforts to solve it. The third part includes Demirel's views on Turkey's position in the modern world and Euro-Atlantic institutions. In that context Biscevic stressed the same strategic goals of the two countries and Turkey's support for Croatia's bid to enter those institutions. (hina) vm jn 221803 MET sep 97
