ZAGREB, Sept 4 (Hina) - The Croatian Government at Thursday's session
adopted a decision by which Croatia waives its portion of the remainder of
the Tripartite Commission for the Restitution of Monetary Gold (TGC), to be
distributed to victims of the Nazi persecution.
The TGC, which gathers representatives from the United States,
Great Britain and France, was established in 1946, with the aim of restituting
monetary gold found in Germany and countries from which it had been
looted during the German occupation. #L#
Before the Government reached the decision, Deputy Foreign
Minister Ivo Sanader addressed the session, informing the participants
about the initiative and a letter that representatives of the World Jewish
Restitution Organisation had forwarded to Foreign Minister Mate Granic in
May, asking for agreement and cooperation for the distribution of the
remainder of the resources from the TGC.
Sanader said the claimant countries, including the former Yugoslavia,
had so far received about 64% of their claim.
According to the current information, the TGC had in its accounts
about US$ 70 million in gold, which it was planning to finally distribute and
thus end its work, Sanader said.
He stressed that the remainder of the money should be distributed to
a number of countries according to a certain 'key'. The part which was to be
distributed to the former Yugoslavia would be compiled into a succession
mass and should be redistributed to all successor countries.
It was to be expected, Sanader said, that Croatia's part was not
exceptionally big. Notwithstanding the amount, the Foreign Ministry
suggested, which the Government adopted, that Croatia give up its part for
the victims of Nazi persecution.
Sanader said that the Foreign Ministry had responded to the letter of
the World Jewish Restitution Organisation, stressing Croatia's readiness to
cooperate regarding the solving of the issue of final distribution of the
resources and reaching a final solution.
Sanader informed the participants about the invitation for Croatia to
participate at the conference on Nazi gold, which is to take place in London
from 2 to 4 December.
The Government accepted that a Croatian delegation, consisting of
representatives of relevant ministries and prominent historians, participate at
the conference as full member.
