CROATIA ON MONITORING COMMITTEE PROGRAMME - COUNCIL OF EUROPE

STRASBOURG, June 23 (Hina) - Croatia's commitments to the Council of Europe would not be discussed at a plenary session of the Council's Parliamentary Assembly, vice president of the Croatian Parliament and head of the Croatian parliamentary delegation at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe Zarko Domljan said in Strasbourg on Monday, but added that Croatia was on the Monitoring Committee programme. The meeting between the Monitoring Committee and the Croatian parliamentary delegation should take place Tuesday and discuss the way Croatia acts in regard to fulfilling its obligations toward the Council of Europe. The discussion would focus on "the issue of the protection of Serbs in the liberated areas, their return, and right to property restitution", said Domljan. The discussion would also focus on abiding to regulations of the Basic Agreement on the Reintegration of the Croatian Danube Region, Croatia's cooperation in the implementation of the Dayton accords, and its cooperation with The Hague-based international war crimes tribunal, the head of the Croatian parliamentary delegation added. The Monitoring Committee would, according to Domljan, demand an explanation of a law on the temporary taking away of property in the liberated areas. The Monitoring Committee has been founded recently with the obligation to supervise the fulfilling of obligations by Council of Europe member-countries, not just of new member-countries but "old democracies" as well, and among its members are Domljan and another member of the Croatian delegation, Count Jakob Eltz of Vukovar. Gunnar Jansson of Finland and Hana Suhocka of Poland were at a 16 May meeting in Paris appointed reporters for Croatia. (hina) ha jn 231653 MET jun 97
