promotion of human rights - civil, political, economic, social,
cultural and developmental, lie upon the government of the world,
Croatian Ambassador at the UN, Ivan Simonovic, said in New York on
Thursday night.
Simonovic spoke at the special plenary session of the UN General
Assembly held on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the
adoption of the General Declaration on Human Rights.
Simonovic said that the violation of human rights during the
aggression on Croatia confirmed the need of a forceful and
effective international mechanism of protection, as well as that
the concept of peace and stability must include care for human
rights.
He advocated that the UN reach a consensus on a new concept of human
rights, considering the challenges set forth by bio-energy,
environment protection, and primarily the still contentious right
to development.
As part of the total reform of the United Nations, Simonovic
motioned changes in the work of the UN Human rights Commission.
