SARAJEVO, Nov 26 (Hina) - European Union representatives on
Thursday handed over the keys of 167 houses to Croat returnees in
Sarajevo's district Stup, which before the war was predominantly
inhabited by Croats.
The project worth DM4 million was carried out by the Italian
humanitarian organisation "Intersos". It included not only the
reconstruction of houses but also the reconstruction of an
elementary school and infrastructure as well as the construction of
a new clinic.
The project is the best example of how to speed up the return of
minority groups, because along with the construction of housing
units, the European Union has also secured funds for the purchase of
agricultural machines, which will enable the economic recovery of
the area, president of the Sarajevo Canton government Beriz Belkic
said at today's ceremony.
The reconstruction project will enable the return of a total of 337
families to their pre-war homes because the Croats who will move in
the reconstructed houses will make vacant residential units for
another 170 families.
