DIFFERENCES IN HDZ BH REMAIN - ZUBAK

( Editorial: --> 9433 ) SARAJEVO/KISELJAK, June 6 (Hina) - The split within the Croatian Democratic Union of Bosnia-Herzegovina (HDZ BH) is too deep to be eliminated solely on the basis of yesterday's talks between representatives of the two currents in the party and the mediation from HDZ President Franjo Tudjman, the Croat member in Bosnia's collective presidency, Kresimir Zubak, said Saturday. A compromise has been reached yesterday in Zagreb, Zubak told reporters in Kiseljak, but the fundamental difference which could only temporarily be overcome with yesterday's talks, still remained. HDZ BH officials Friday held talks with Croatian officials in Zagreb discussing current events in the HDZ BH following the party's recent convention and Zubak's announcement for the establishment of a new party which would be based on the original platform of the HDZ BH. "I think that in the future, when facing new issues and the future of BH and the Croats' position in it, we shall again differ in opinions, views and assessments", Zubak said, emphasising this was his personal opinion. The agreement reached in Zagreb yesterday "may show results by the time of the (Bosnian) September election", but conflicts will recur, Zubak told reporters. "This is perhaps even natural given the character of the party. It still primarily functions as a movement, not a party", he said. Zubak found it unnatural that high military officials were involved in a party's political life. "This is not natural for the democratic society which we want to build, and if we want to integrate as a people into the western democratic society, then we must free ourselves from what existed in the former society, when professional soldiers were simultaneously politicians", Zubak said. He emphasised the same remarks could be made in relation to wealth- gain because, he said, some responsible individuals in the HDZ BH had become very rich, which brought to the split in the party on a moral and ethical level.
