KOVAC VIEWS CRO OPPOSITION VICTORY AS PERNICIOUS FOR BOSNIA CROATS

MOSTAR, Dec 18 (Hina) - Candidates of Croatia's ruling HDZ party at its electoral list for the Diaspora - the head of the list, Milan Kovac, and the third candidate, Ljubo Cesic Rojs - on Saturday held a news conference in Bosnia-Herzegovina's southern city of Mostar. Commenting on claims of the international Stabilisation Force (SFOR) that during the October 14 operation in Mostar SFOR found material that brings discredit upon the work of the Croat security services both from Croatia and Bosnia, Kovac described that as manipulation and an attempt to tarnish the reputation of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) in the run-up to Croatia's parliamentary election. "I am confident that the HDZ at our electoral list will gain more votes than at the previous elections," Kovac said basing his hope on the support his party had received at pre-election public gatherings in the last three days in Bosnia-Herzegovina. The HDZ will abide by the policy of the late Croatian President, Franjo Tudjman, for Croats in Bosnia-Herzegovina - the party will support the maintenance of sovereignty of the Croat people and its being constituent in Bosnia through the protection of its right to education, culture, media and schools, Kovac added. He cautioned that the victory of Croatia's opposition at the election would be disastrous for Bosnian Croats. Commenting on the recent SFOR action in the (Croat-controlled) western Mostar and Friday's presentation of results of that operation when SFOR officials mentioned certain HDZ members in that context, Kovca asserted that "during the pre-election campaign there are co-ordinated attempts to ruin the reputation of the HDZ at all levels." He voiced assurance that SFOR manipulated with materials confiscated in western Mostar on 14 October. "I believe that when they did not want to give a list of items which they then impounded there will be manipulation and that they will be capable of doing what they are doing now, taking some documents I do not know from where," the HDZ official added. Kovac held that the purpose of all such actions is to help those acceptable for the international community to rise to power in Croatia. Ljubo Cesic Rojs promised the continuation of the financing of the Bosnian Croat Defence Council (HVO) and war invalids in line with provisions of the Croatian legislation, the support to the return of Croats to security areas in Bosnia, reconstruction of their homes as well as settlement of Croats in new areas in Bosnia.
