ZAGREB, Nov 4 (Hina) - Croatian Interior Minister Ivan Penic on Thursday opened a two-day conference on the subject "Confiscating goods amassed by criminal act -- role and obligations by the authorities of the Republic of Croatia".
Penic said this conference would show one of the basic criminal principles -- that crime must not pay off. Penic said that in the first nine months 43,000 crimes had been registered in Croatia, which is an about 3.5 per cent increase in relation to the same period last year. Of all the crimes registered, he said, 4,927 were organised crimes. A large number of such crimes, Penic said, were tempted by large amounts of money. "However, if we confiscate the money, Mafia heads will perish and the number of organised crimes will decrease," Penic stressed.
