Vukovar is a symbol of freedom, dignity and all best achievements
which we have accomplished or should accomplish, said Jadranka
Kosor, who along with Vladimir Seks, has drafted this proposal.
The proposers' intention is to remember on 18 November each year
that genocide, ecocide and culturocide was committed in a Croatian
town, in Europe, in the end of 1991, Kosor told the upper house.
Kosor recalled how much Vukovar and its citizens had suffered
during then Serb-led Yugoslav Army's aggression against Croatia.
While defending Vukovar, 597 soldiers gave their lives, 1,026 were
wounded and 368 defenders are still on lists of detained and missing
persons.
We would like to remind of the heinous and unprecedented crime in
Vukovar Hospital, of the New Cemetery - the biggest mass grave in
Europe since World War Two - as well as of numerous civilians who
spent over 80 days in a town under the most horrible siege, she
added.
