ZAGREB, Oct 26 (Hina) - The ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ)
on Monday said it was "extremely unusual, inappropriate,
unnecessary, and disrespectful to forward a public question to the
Croatian President; "whether him and the HDZ would ensure
democratic, fair and free elections, and whether it would allow
parties or coalitions of parties, which gain most votes in the
elections, to form a government".
"Such questions, which we in the HDZ believe belong to insulting and
impudent political provocation, the Opposition Six wants to give
the public a pre-electoral message reading;
First, that the HDZ has already lost the elections, and that they
have already won, even without the elections.
Second, that a non-democratic regime is in power in Croatia, which
has no intention of ceding power to those who win at fair and
democratic elections.
And third, which the Opposition fears the most, is the creation of
an alibi to justify their own failures at the election, reads a
statement of HDZ spokesman Ivica Ropus.
The statement read that the HDZ's message to all those who were
lacking faith and determination during the creation of independent
and democratic Croatia that they are lacking faith one more time and
the Croatia is a democratic country with the constitutional-legal
order which is on the level of modern west European countries.
Leaders of the Opposition Six can find answers to their questions in
the Croatian Constitution and Croatian laws, and the HDZ and its
president have no intention of answering to underrating questions
which are not supposed to be asked in democratic systems, Ropus
said.
The coordinator of the Opposition Six on Monday said that the
Opposition Six would not continue the negotiations with the HDZ on
electoral legislature until the President voices his opinion on the
subject clearly, whether he and his party will ensure fair and
democratic elections, and whether they will accept the electoral
results, that is, allow parties or coalitions of parties, which
gain most votes in the elections, to form a government.
