ZAGREB, Oct 21 (Hina) - The head of the HDZ bench in the Croatian
National Sabor's House of Representatives, Vladimir Seks, on
Thursday evening denied assertions of Opposition Six that the
regulated procedure was not respected for the candidacy of eight
possible judges of the Constitutional Court.
Speaking after deputies of the six opposition parties (which make
up Opposition Six) left the Sabor's hall, the HDZ official
described their conduct and reasons they cited for such action as
ridiculous and frivolous. He announced that his party's bench will
support all eight proposed candidates for Constitutional Court
judges on whom the lower house is to vote tomorrow.
Commenting on statements of the Opposition Six, Seks recalled that
at the beginning of June the Constitutional Court's President
informed that eight Constitutional Courts judges' term of eight
years would expire at the beginning of December.
Who has hindered any political party, MP, individual to propose
candidates for this post, Seks wondered.
He added that in September a constitutional act on the
Constitutional Court had been passed anonymously and since then
everybody has had opportunities to submit candidacies.
He said the House of Counties' judiciary, appointment and election
committee, which is a multiparty committee has approved
unanimously the list of those eight candidates, except two ones.
This list was before the lower house on Thursday.
In addition, in the mid-October four opposition parties - HSS, LS,
IDS and HNS (which constitute Opposition Four), and another
opposition party SDP forwarded their proposals for judges to the
House of Counties, he said explaining that they had forwarded their
proposals, signed them, but this evening they left the session
refusing to take part in the procedure of the election under the
ridiculous pretext that the regulated procedure had not been
respected. According to Seks, the real reasons are somewhere else-
in squabbles and mistrust among themselves.
