ZAGREB, Oct 15 (Hina) - About 300 activists of Croatian
associations for environmental protection staged a rally on Friday
in Zagreb, protesting against the genetically manipulated food.
The protesters stuck citizens' messages supporting the campaign,
addressed to Agriculture Ministry Ivan Djurkic, at the Ministry
building.
"Green Acton" president Toni Vidan said the Ministry this year
approved the sowing of genetically manipulated corn for the third
time. This was done after two consecutive years of unallowed
sowing, without the knowledge of the public and despite a
parliamentary ban.
The activists demanded from Djurkic to observe conclusions adopted
by the Croatian National Parliament on November 27, 1998
prohibiting experiments with genetically manipulated seed until
adequate legislation is adopted. They also urge the adoption of a
law regulating the import, production, and trial sowing of
genetically modified organisms and that food importers be obliged
to clearly mark genetically modified food products.
