ZAGREB, Oct 5 (Hina) - The Union of Metal Workers of Croatia (SMH) on Tuesday released an open letter warning about the difficult situation in metal industry and announcing a protest rally for October 7 in Rijeka. SMH president Ivica
Jakopcevic reminds in the letter that of the 65,000 metal workers in Croatia, more than 11,000 are not receiving their salaries regularly (amounting to DM180-250), whereas 20 per cent have not been receiving any salary for several months to a year. Jakopcevic claims that 23 companies are undergoing bankruptcy proceedings while another two are facing them, which could result in the laying-off of another 3,900 workers. In the nine years of Croatia's independence, more than 100,000 metal workers have lost their jobs, for which the Government is partly responsible, the letter said.(hina) rml
