BASKA VODA/ZAGREB, Oct 3 (Hina) - A three-day symposium on
environmental issues ended in the southern Croatian coastal town of
Baska Voda on Sunday.
Participants in the event concluded that ecological ethics should
offer guidelines for activities under concrete circumstances.
According to a Statement issued by participants in the symposium, a
vicious circle of environmental and social problems becomes more
intricate in countries where basic economic branches such as
tourism, ecological agriculture and cattle-breeding, are based on
diverse and sound environment. Croatia is one of such countries
that must invest maximum efforts in order to protect the
environment and ensure that health food is produced and tourism
developed so that the country would not succumb to temptations of
certain attractive solutions that can bring quick but short-term
results in th economy.
What is particularly important is the protection of water. A
shortage of water affects the Mediterranean and is one of major
ecological problems world-wide. Croatia should know how to
preserve its natural reserves of water, advised participants in the
symposium entitled "Responsibility for Life".
They also advocate the adoption of a strategy for the ecological
education. In this context, they maintain, the Catholic Church can
play an important role starting to teach children about ecological
matter within religion classes.
The symposium was organised by Franciscan Institute for Peace
Culture, Split University, theological colleges in Split and
Sarajevo and the "Lijepa Nasa" environmentalists' society.
