Representatives of "Apel", a centre for the protection of human
rights of missing and detained Croatian citizens and the
association "Bedem ljubavi 91" handed ICRC officials a letter
requesting that they be allowed to visit mines near the Yugoslav
town of Aleksinac. The association claims they have information
that Croats imprisoned during the Homeland War are being detained
in those mines.
Croatia is still searching for 1,692 persons.
The families of the missing and detained today lit candles in front
of the ICRC headquarters protesting against lack of engagement on
ICRC's part, as well as against its insufficient engagement in
protecting the civil population during the Homeland War.
"Apel" president Zdenka Farkas said the protest would be staged
every Thursday until the end of 1999, the year in which the 50th
anniversary of the Geneva Conventions is marked.
"We want to warn and remind the public of the grave violations of the
humanitarian law in the Homeland War, which happened before the
very eyes of international representatives", Farkas said.
