ZAGREB, Sept 30 (Hina) - The Croatian National Parliament House of
Representatives on Thursday continued its session with a
discussion on the ruling Croatian Democratic Union's (HDZ) and
Social Democratic Party's (SDP) drafts on amendments to the Law on
Value Added Tax.
HDZ MPs described the SDP's draft as unrealistic and frivolous.
They described their own draft, however, as realistic, socially
justified and simple to apply.
Hailing any tax relief, the Opposition responded to the HDZ by
describing their draft as a pre-election trick which will neither
help the fallen economy nor the poorer sections of the society.
The Opposition sees the only solution as being radical changes of
the tax system and a decrease in the unified VAT rate.
In the course of the exhaustive discussion, MPs described as good
the motion by the Committee for Economy, Development and
Reconstruction, on the establishment of a consumer support
commission so the "trade lobby" would not eliminate the positive
effects of introducing a 'zero VAT rate' on bread, medicines and
books.
MPs also endorsed a motion by the Labour, Social Policy and Health
Committee that the zero rate should be expanded onto medicinal and
orthopaedic aids.
