manager Aleksandar Caklovic on Friday refuted former transport
minister Zeljko Luzavec's accusations that he was responsible for a
recent traffic collapse across Pag Bridge because of delays in
reconstruction works on the bridge.
"It is difficult to comment on Luzavec's accusations, because we
never had any personal conflicts, and I was surprised when he asked
for my dismissal," Caklovic told reporters in Zagreb. He refused to
comment on Luzavec's dismissal.
The HUC cannot be held responsible for the Pag Bridge traffic
collapse which, he said, was not the result of delays in completing
the bridge's reconstruction, but the fact that due to strong winds
only one ferry line had been operative.
Reconstruction, which began in January, was to be completed by mid-
July and was late due to objective reasons, Caklovic said. Works
could not be carried out for 35 days due to strong winds and the fact
that, due to the Kosovo crisis, the delivery of a steel construction
from Macedonia was late. Reconstruction will be completed by the
end of September, he said.
Caklovic also refuted Luzavec's accusation that he and
Reconstruction Minister Jure Radic belonged to a "construction
lobby" which was given the best deals in road-building, while more
favourable offers by foreign investors were turned down.
"The HUC carries out all of its works via bids for tenders. To date,
all major Croatian construction companies have worked for us (...)
so we could perhaps talk about a 'national construction lobby'," he
said.
