SERB OFFICIAL VOICES CONCERN ABOUT SECURITY IN KNIN AREA

KNIN, Aug 18 (Hina) - The president of the Serb National Council and Croatian MP, Milorad Pupovac, on Wednesday voiced his concern about security in the area of Knin, a town in central-southern Croatia which occupied by Serb aggressors between 1991 and 1995. According to Pupovac, the situation in the area has recently been destabilised by Croatian Party of Rights (HSP) announcements of the establishment of intervention groups which should protect the tenancy rights of Croats who have moved to Knin from nearby Bosnia- Herzegovina. Knin is an important place for the future of overall Croatian-Serb relations, Pupovac asserted. He urged Croatian authorities to begin resolving the problems of the Croat settlers, as well as those of Serbs who have returned to their pre-war homes in the town. Problem-solving must not be left up to political opportunists who advocate action which has no political foundation, said Pupovac. He pointed out the HSP was manipulating with the difficult situation in the Knin area, and that its activity could endanger Croatia's national interests. Pupovac expressed satisfaction with cooperation with Croatian police, adding this cooperation will tell Croatia's political circles that problems must be solved by political means. (hina) ha
