ZAGREB, Aug 19 (Hina) - Croatia's newly appointed Minister of
Maritime Affairs, Transport, and Communications, Ivan Pavlovic, on
Thursday told Hina he would like Croatia to become a competing route
for the transport of goods from Central Europe to the Adriatic Sea.
Pavlovic mentioned Slovenia's railway, roads, and the Koper port as
models.
The new minister said he would advocate a fair privatisation of
Croatia's harbours, and expressed hope trade unions will be
satisfied with his approach in that regard.
Speaking about difficulties faced by ship owners, Pavlovic said he
was very well acquainted with them, given his tenure as harbour
director in Ploce, a port in southern-most Croatia.
Minister Pavlovic said he would advocate, in keeping with the
possibilities of his ministry, that the state grant ship owners
subsidies for shipbuilding in domestic shipyards.
He also said the shipping industry should be given an entirely new
treatment in foreign trade.
Asked what he intended to do to eliminate the difficulties recently
caused by bridges, Pavlovic said, "it's too early to talk about
that, because I have just received information on what state they
are in."
