ZAGREB, Aug 8 (Hina) - On the occasion of the 71st anniversary of the death of Stjepan Radic, a delegation of the Croatian Peasants' Party (HSS), led by president Zlatko Tomcic, on Sunday laid a wreath at Radic's grave at Zagreb's
cemetery Mirogoj. "Any nation, which in its history had a man like Stjepan Radic, should be happy", HSS president Zlatko Tomcic said. Stjepan Radic, a politician and writer, was born on August 11, 1871 in Trebarjevo Desno. With his brother Antun he formed the Croatian Peasants' Party in 1904, and his political work was directed toward the right of the Croatian people to their own identity and against Belgrade's centralism. Radic's principles were faith in peasants, social justice and national freedoms. Radic was one of HSS representatives who were shot at on June 20,
1928, at the Yugoslav Assembly by a Radical Party member Punisa
Racic. HSS representatives Pavle Radic and Djuro Basaricek were
shot dead on the spot while Radic was severely wounded. He died of
his injuries on August 8, 1928 in Zagreb.
