ZAGREB, July 14 (Hina) - The Union of Anti-Fascist Fighters of Croatia on Wednesday marked the 58th anniversary of the Kerestinec victims with a wreath-laying ceremony in front of the monument near Kerestinec Castle, outside Zagreb.
On July 8, 1941, on the same location, the Ustashi executed a group of Croatian anti-fascists, including prominent intellectuals. Today's ceremony also commemorated the anniversary of a failed attempt of about one hundred anti-fascists to escape from the Kerestinec prison on the night between July 13 and 14. The Union's president Ivan Fumic emphasised the importance of promoting Croatia's anti-fascist tradition. Remembering the Kerestinec victims is one way of "putting up resistance to totalitarianism and neo-fascism", Fumic said, adding Croatia's future must be based on the principles of anti-fascism, democracy, equality and the rule of law.(hina) jn rml
