CAKOVEC DESECRATED CAKOVEC, Aug 6 (Hina) - An unidentified perpetrator or a group of perpetrators desecrated a Jewish monument in the northern Croatian town of Cakovec on August 2. The perpetrators took away a marble plaque on a
monument erected in the town centre on May 25, 1997, which said the monument was erected on the location of a synagogue which had been destroyed by the Hungarians in 1944, at the time the Medjimurje region, including Cakovec, was under Hungarian occupation. Djordje Pal, a retired paediatrician and the president of the Cakovec Jewish community, said the police and the town authorities had been informed about the incident. Police said an intensive investigation was underway and its results would be published. The town authorities expressed regret over the incident adding such incidents had never happened before and that the Jewish community was highly respected.(hina) rml
