"Relations within the Opposition Six cannot avoid the intricacy of six party programmes but since we have common goals, those programmes must be secondary", Gotovac told a new conference. ZAGREB, July 20 (Hina) - Liberal Party (LS) president Vlado Gotovac
on Tuesday estimated that the 'Opposition Six' had yesterday
confirmed willingness to strengthen mutual relations as well as
that party interests cannot be put before mutual strategic
interests of the 'Opposition Six'.
"Relations within the Opposition Six cannot avoid the intricacy of
six party programmes but since we have common goals, those
programmes must be secondary", Gotovac told a new conference.
The question of how the Opposition Six will participate in the
elections still remains open. "We shall definitely discuss it after
the election law is adopted and once we decide what would be the best
solution for the Opposition Six", Gotovac said.
The party's secretary Bozo Kovacevic said the LS supported the
Opposition's joint appearance in the elections, because all polls
showed that it would bring the Opposition a two-third majority. If
the Social-Democratic Party (SDP) and the Croatian Social-Liberal
Party (HSLS) have privileged relations, the LS will with the other
three parties (Croatian Peasants' Party, Istrian Democratic
Assembly, Croatian People's Party) strengthen that bloc, Kovacevic
said.
Commenting on the statement by Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ)
negotiator Vladimir Seks that all had been agreed on with the
Opposition, Gotovac said no agreement had been reached on any
important issue, but rather on the framework, topics and the
schedule of discussions. "We are still far from an agreement, but we
are also far from the basic preconditions for talks", he added.
The continuation of talks between the HDZ and the Opposition on new
electoral legislation depends on the HDZ. "We are ready, if the need
arises, to come to Zagreb any time and resume talks. But at the
moment, there are no signs it would happen", he said.
Gotovac said the HDZ's policy, which is lacking credibility, is
also being conducted in international relations, where Croatia is
constantly being faced with new demands. Gotovac mentioned
problems with The Hague Tribunal, and the Stability Pact, which, he
said, is a great opportunity for Croatia to use its political,
economic and geostrategic advantages.
