ZAGREB, July 12 (Hina) - The Opposition Six is waiting for the
ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) to respond to opposition
parties' proposals for the electoral legislation in order that the
Opposition Six may plan further steps, said the current co-
ordinator of this group of opposition parties and the president of
the Croatian Social and Liberal Party (HSLS), Drazen Budisa, in
Zagreb on Monday.
He warned that the time was important, as if it was not known on time
when exactly the election should be held then some provisions of the
May agreement between the HDZ and the Opposition might be brought in
question, Budisa explained.
In the meantime a meeting of the interparty working group for
amendments to the act on the Croatian Radio and Television (HRT) has
been scheduled for Wednesday.
The Opposition Six (consisting of HSLS, SDP, HSS, HNS, LS and IDS)
proposed that the vote be held on December 5. In case it is accepted,
then a new electoral law, an act on the HRT and a law on electoral
units must be adopted by August 5, Budisa said.
It is important that constituencies be a territorial units and that
cities, except from Zagreb, should not be divided, municipalities
as wholes should be included into electoral units and a difference
in the number of eligible voters per constituency should not be
bigger than five percent, he added.
He reiterated that it was important that the HDZ respond to the
opposition's suggestion as soon as possible in order that an
extraordinary session of the Croatian National Sabor might be held
in July or August. Budisa said that at least three months before the
elections a new act on the HRT must come into force.
Asked by reporters about the announcement of the joint
participation of the HSLS and SDP (Social and Democratic Party) in
the parliamentary election, Budisa answered that a decision of the
HSLS Grand Council obliged him to finish negotiations with other
parties by August 15, on the joint participation in the vote, adding
that it would be done so before that deadline.
